Hi all. I have 2 wisteria. A Sinensis Prolific and a white variety. I've had them a couple of years now and I'm always confused about what I should and should not be snipping off. I think it is this time of year when the wispy growth is cut back. Looking at the photo, are these the wispy growths or the growth I should be leaving?

Hello Harri, the first thing to get clear in your mind is what the framework of your Wisteria will be. Will it cover a wall, or an archway, or be a free-standing 'umbrella' shape? During it's first few years, the pruning depends on which stem or stems you want to keep to form this framework. Tie it/them in to the support, then cut all the wispy growth coming off them to leave 2 or 3 leaves (or buds in the winter). January/June or February/July is an easy formula to remember for when to do it :) Keep an eye open for suckers around the rootstock and pull/twist them off when they're still soft.

Thanks for the replies they are very helpful. I will tie these into the cross member then and trim off any side shoots should they appear down to the correct length. I am eager to see the Shiro Kapitan flower as if anybody has been to Bodnant gardens they will have seen it flowering there.
