    Hey there,

Having recently moved into a new block of flats, I seem to have adopted the small scruffy patch of ground outside my window, but so far have been merely keeping it weed free and (relatively) tidy...

I've not had a garden in my adult life, though i have fond memories of pottering about with my grandparents "helping" with their garden, and have decided, despite a manifest lack of experience or inbuilt talent, to try and make the little bit of ground outside my window look as pretty and presentable as possible. This is where you folks come in! I'm gonna be needing advice and tips, so please be gentle!

    Thanks in advance, Toby.

    Hi and welcome to GC.

How big is this garden, and how much sunlight does it get? What else can you tell us about it, or better still, can you show us pictures?

Thanks for the speedy replies folks!

I took a bunch of pictures this afternoon, and was gonna put down all the details and so forth above, but then read the bit about not asking questions in the introduction sections, and didn't want to annoy the mods on my first post!

Would it be wise to start a new thread as, this being a rented place, and seeing as I don't actually own the ground outside, plus the fact that there is no actual soil, means that it's gonna have to be a container garden, and pretty low maintenance due to my work schedule...

I'm pretty sure that no one will object to me putting a few pots out there as long as they stay looking nice but if things start to get scruffy, or I start digging oles and making changes that can't be undone by picking up a pot and moving it, then I might get in trouble...

I'll dig out the camera and load up the pics shortly!

OK, the "garden" is East facing, about 6-7 feet deep by about 20 feet wide at a rough guess. lots of light in the morning, as it faces onto a road and junction, not so much in the afternoons, as the building is three stories high, but it's never exactly dingy (these pics were taken at about 8pm tonight.)

As I say, it faces onto a road with a pavement the other side of the wall, so is exposed all passing traffic and pedestrians (some of whom are, on the occasional Friday night, mildly inebriated and in a mood to purloin things, or to throw kebabs into the garden...) I was thinking that if I were to pretty things up, rather than keep it the wasteground that it is, this might lessen, as most folk will hesitate to chuck stuff into a nice maintained garden, but have no problem littering what is perceived as wasteground.

So the requirements are - Low maintenance, hardy, potted, pretty and easy.

    Suggestions?
