Hi

I just joined this site over the weekend and I’m quite new to gardening. I only started growing veg last year in my garden on quite a small scale and my dad managed to successfully relocate my grans old greenhouse for me which was a bonus. Things went really well and although it was only a small space I managed to pack quite a lot in and totally fell in love with growing veg. I have recently enquired with my local council about the possibility of having a ½ size plot (was a little scared at the full size option lol) on the allotments round the corner from my house and hope to have one in the next few weeks so I can grow much more this year. Still have a huge amount to learn but loving the challenge and can’t wait to see what I can do this year.

:sign0016:Hello and welcome Becks.
I manage to grow all my own vegetables. I grow in my own garden in a mixture of deep beds and containers.
Isn't it just amazing what you can grow in a small space. 1 square yard will produce loads of beans.
What are you growing ?

Hi Becks,

Welcome to the forums.

You're right about a half size plot, a full size one can be a lot of work to get ready. Gave mine up when I started working away as I just didn't have the time to keep it up.

Hi

I grew a bit of a mixture last year just a little bit of everything which was good to see what worked but as my beds are only small 2 cabbages, 1 sprout plant and 1 broccoli didn’t go very far lol I tried potatoes in the growbags as I thought digging for them in the ground would be a nightmare and I would end up missing half of them but although they worked and tasted yummy I couldn’t grow enough so will have to give a another go in the ground when I get my plot and see how I go. (do potatoes have to be moved and grown in a different place each time?)

In containers I grew courgette, cucumber, peas, potatoes, radishes and chillies. In the greenhouse I grew mainly tomatoes, tried melon but didn’t work same with peppers and the strawberries but then I realised the strawberries should prob have been outside to be pollinated. And in my 3 little beds I grew carrots, parsnips herbs lettuce, onions, garlic, sprouts, broccoli (didn’t work the dog ate it) cabbage, green beans and sweetcorn.

Hi Becks. That's a great selection you grew - even if it is only a little bit of everything.
I prefer that method and don't grow things in huge quantities as there's only 2 of us and I prefer to eat things in season rather than stored.
You're right about the strawberries being better outside. I think strawberries grown in greenhouses or polytunnels are tastleless, like the ones in the supermarket, but if they are outside for a winter they are much sweeter with that real strawberry flavour.
Hope you get your half plot soon and look forward to hearing all about it.
