    Hello everyone,

I'm a new member here so I thought I'd say hi. I've really joined for some inspiration and advice after moving home in May and inheriting a fairly small and not very well loved garden!

We also have a small area on the front drive which is my main current project - I'll be planting some holly and laurel for the new hedge and hoping to also plant a mixture of evergreen shrubs along with some herbs and flowers, hopefully to attract beneficial insects and smaller birds (any thoughts or ideas welcomed!).

One thing I have noticed is that there are a large number of aphid-type creatures and harlequin ladybirds on our gateposts! I'm guessing I'll need to eradicate these before I plant up the new stuff. I have looked at the rest of the houses on our street and can't see any evidence of them anywhere else, so I don't know what's attracting them to our patch! The only things unique to our drive are a large bamboo and also the fact that our gateposts are painted red...

Very best wishes to you all,

    Ryan

      We have a new member

      Hi Ryan

We like photo's on here , and its really good to look back of what you have done
I would leave the ladybirds to do the job they like most and thats eat aphids , the new H ladybird is widespread across the UK no point in getting rid, probaly just having a warm in the sun

Hi Ryan, welcome to Gardeners Corner:thumbsup::snork: Spruce is spot on, as usual, about leaving the Ladybirds to go about their business eating the Aphids. If you go around spraying insecticides in the garden you'll only succeed in killing off every beneficial insect that could be helping you.:snork:

          Welcome in Ryan.
          Good luck with your project.
I have 2 types of Holly. One is a variagated leaf with NO SPIKES. It's an attractive looker and harmless.
          The other is PAINFUL.
If you are thinking of a Holly hedge in the front garden you should consider passers-by (especially kids). Accidental contact with the more severe forms of Holly can cause injury.

Hiya Ryan. I would suggest a holly called Golden King for your, hedge. It's fairly quick growing, has berries and no thorny
Leaves etc. golden king is actually a FEMALE holly. All the, hollies are named this way, viz. the male names are female and vice versa.

                  Dear all,

Many thanks for the friendly welcome and all your tips and advice - that's really helpful!

I will leave the leave the ladybirds alone! I'll attach a couple of pictures later which aren't great but show a couple of the ladybird larvae and some of the other critters!

The advice on the holly is great - I'm hoping to plant it within the next few weeks so I'll send some more photos once it's in!

                  Thanks again,

                  Ryan
