So, as you can see from the pictures...
The dogs have turned the back garden into a dust track. That said, it gets very little light in the summer and it was mostly moss anyway. The stunted apple tree and the bent cherry laurel will have to go, as will the pine trees that are depriving them of light. One of the pine trees in the middle is draped in those creeper things - I think they open up as purple flowers, like honeysuckle... might even be a honeysuckle, but totally out of control. The shrubs in a row will all be gone - I'll perhaps take cuttings off them... maybe. The gravel at the front will all be gone - I know the perspective makes the left hand side look bigger than the right, but in reality they are about the same size. Almost all of the plants in the pots will be going in the ground at some point... All in all, a fair bit of work for an old bloke like me :D

Not sure how much of a help it would be, but the middle one is very much a low level spreader. The stems are thick, woody and twisted, and the plant seems intent on covering as much ground as it can

          Pic turned...had a closer look.
Clear close up pics might help...cannot see any evidence of twisted stems in your pic.
Leaves appear opposite. Lovely and glossy.
          Maybe Euonymus

Sorry - I see what you mean about the twisted stems - I meant the main ones that are close to the ground - the actual ones with the leaves on are certainly not

Having trouble trying to visualize this.
          Pics still needed.
Need to see these twisted stems that are close to the ground.
