Hole in my tree

Hi

I recently bought a Tulip Tree. (Liriodendron)
I looked the other day and there was a kind of lesion at the base of it. It was weeping and was attracting fruit flies. I didn't think the fruit flies had made the sore (just thought it had happened in transit) but thought it best to cover it up. The only thing i had to hand was a plaster so i put that over it.
I looked at the tree today and realised that there was wood being bored out of the lesion and in fact right through the plaster. I watched as it it was being pushed out from inside the tree - quite weird! Any ideas what this might be and how do i stop it from potentially killing the tree. The hole is circular and not quite a centimetre in diameter. I enclose a few pics

Weird, never seen anything like it, presume its some kind of beetle larvae in there.
Where ever you bought it needs to be told if it was there when it arrived.
Cant think the tree will ever be any good after that boring in at the base.

Just wonder if it might be an imported plant?

 

Just typed in. something boring a hole in the tree. on the net. Plenty of info there.

 

I don't like using pesticides, but I would think drastic action needed here - scrape out latest sawdusty stuff and squirt in some pesticide. As Pete says, if it has pushed out all that stuff, the tree may be a goner anyway.
