[IMG] Well it is lovely & sunny but cold..!! The horseradish doesn't seem to mind though. It is a rather boring plant to look at the rest of the year, but at this time it is a very pretty flower too...!! [IMG]

MF: You look like just the person to have a recipe for horseradish sauce (since your growing it!)?

Could never quite understand how you manage to get some grated root, without disturbing the plant. Do you just dig down the side and hack a piece off?

I tried to grow it in a container, but it don't leave you much space to do this, and then the plant suddenly died anyway?

But if I had the necessary info. including a nice recipe then perhaps another go next year! ;)

DAG my dad used to try to grow it for years but always failed, then someone explained to him that the docks he was digging out were actually horseradish........durrrrrrr!

Anyway mum made fantastic sauce with it, she made a basic panada with plane flower butter milk pepper salt, then just chopped the whole root up and stuck it into the liquidiser. when you took the top off it was just like smelling smelling salts - blew your head off so we quickly learnt to keep a good distance!

My daughter has a big plant in the garden, we just hack some off when we want to make horseradish sauce, and so far it's survived. [IMG]
It was in the garden when she arrived, the bits we hack off are quite woody but liquidise OK , and make great sauce. As waco says, a little goes a long way!

[IMG] here you go DAG. This is the one we use...!
    300ml (½ pint) Double Cream
    225g (8oz) Horseradish
    225g (8oz) White Breadcrumbs
    25g (1oz) Caster Sugar
    2 tsp Mustard
    1 tbsp Vinegar
    Salt

Soak the breadcrumbs in milk for a few minutes to soften.
    Grate the peeled horseradish root.
Squeeze the breadcrumbs to remove excess milk and combine well with the horseradish.
Add the sugar, mustard, vinegar and slat to taste.
Lightly whip the cream and fold in to the mixture.
    Serve very cold.

BE VERY CAREFUL WHEN GRATING THE ROOT...!!! vERY POWERFULL!!! HAVE THE DOOR OPEN... :D :D :D

OK. MF, went out and bought a small horseradish plant today, :D just one place I could fit it in, against east fence and partly shaded by greenhouse to the south, but would get late afternoon sun.

Will be in heavy clay so big hole and plenty of compost, that sound ok? ;)

P.S. You talked me into it, so its all down to you know! :D :D

:D Oh well done.. You will enjoy it... :D
What can I say. It is a perennial & likes rich moist soil & full sun if possible. Ours has grown here since before we came here 30yrs ago. I just lift what we need really & then in the autumn when it dies back I lift the last we shall need for the winter. I would wait & see how much you have this year.. ;) I store them in sand like carrots etc... Happy growing... [IMG] They are invasive though...

MF: Ahhh...invasive, now I remember why I started to grow it in a pot last year!

Have I got full sun, rich moist soil... [IMG]

Think I will just keep it in a pot this year and try to create space for it in the garden next year? ;)

    Thanks again MF.

P.S. Won't be slicing the beef just yet then? :D

:D Well DAG, I have a friend who only has a courtyard & she grows it very successfully in a large planter. Always has plenty..!! She shifts it to a sheltered position for the winter so that it doesn't get waterlogged, because if they do & we get a hard frost they don't cope so well in containers  !!

Is there a best time of year to dig the horse radish roots up? I'd love to try it but don't know when to start. Hotter the better for me.

    [IMG] Hi Nik,
We usually dig our roots up during October & Novemeber. Preferably after a frost then the flavour is better.... ;) You can also dig them in the spring before the plants get going..... :D I would say, to you & DAG, if you are going to grow it, not to harvest in the first year, then you will be sure of having plenty & the root not being over harvested.... If you want to grow it in a container you will need a large planter as the roots need depth.... :D Enjoy.... It grows wild around here as well, so always a supply... ;) [IMG]
