I'd go along with possible ginger of some kind.
Can you give a root a scrape?

Would it smell of ginger? It's not my plant so will pass this question on.

The leaves do look like my outdoor ginger plants, thinking of 'Tara'.

Ginger, Cardamom and Tumeric leaves are similar and do have slightly aromatic leaves so it could be one of them but not usually sold or grown as a house plant

Thanks for the replies. My friend now remembers it is Curcuma. He saw it growing in Florida where it looked wonderful and decided to try it!
