Nabbed this little rooted section from one of my son's houseplants last weekend...no idea what it is though. Your help greatly appreciated yet again folks. Thanks. IMG_20211020_142909_hdr.jpg

It reminds me of a Calathea/Maranta but the colour is not right.

 I think you're on the right track there Vicky :love30:.

I've just found this online a Calathea Lancifolia ....what do you think? Not forgetting that mine is just a baby.

The underside of one of my leaves is beginning to turn red.

I think its a Maranta, but there are different ones, Maranta (plant) - Wikipedia

The brighter light levels might bring out the leaf markings better.

On second thoughts, Calathea as @Victoria said and yourself @Upsydaisy .

Just ignore me, I've just poked my nose in halfway through.

I had originally thought perhaps the original lighting was perhaps not right for it. The red underside sort of confirms it too.

Oh Ok Pete thanks ....I think the markings of the Maranta do look a bit different to be honest.

Vicky one of the leaves is a bit scorched, although son's girlfriend is very good with plant care, I think a bit of TLC is called for and it's probably in a bit of shock still from having to endure a 3 hour car trip without soil. Poor little mite.

Thanks though, at least I can now read up on it's care requirements. :)

I never know what the correct name is for these plants. I have a few types. I call this one Calathea burle marksii because it's the nearest I could find when I did a Google search.

Ok.. Thanks Michael, I'll look that one up too to see if the care needs are the same or similar.

I keep them in a shady position and water when very dry. Sometimes the leaves curl up when they need water. I don't think they like soggy soil.

This is a modern cultivar and may have evolved from Goeppertia (used to be Calathea) insignis. and/or lanceolata. Many varieties have red/maroon undersides, my Calathea surprise star has.

The leaf colour underneath suggests to me it's a Maranta (Prayer plant). The leaves will curl at night and unfold again in the morning.
