Just been to Notcutts and they had loads of plants at 50% off so just couldnt resist! One of the plants I bought was an hydrangea- endless summer its called. Looks like a few dead sticks in a pot but it does have some buds beginning at the tips and halfway down. If i leave it in the pot for now and put it on the patio would I need to protect it from cold weather at all? Also dont know much about pruning them either so if anyone could save me a trawl through the net I would be grateful!

Hi L-G, as it is so young I would either put it in a cold greenhouse or in a sheltered place and cover with fleece if frost is forecast.
I would not prune this year. Once it is established you could prune in late winter or early spring it needs it. I usually do mine by about a third every other year to a strong bud to stop it getting leggy. It is recommended that the old flower heads are left on during winter to protect the new buds.
It likes sheltered conditions in sun or dappled shade and add leafmould and compost into the planting hole.
    Good luck.
