I. D. Help Please.

The leaves are grass like, the flowers only look like this for a short time, maybe an hour and only once! The seed heads are large, like a dandelion. I have dug it up and it had a tap root. I have searched but can’t find anything like it.

    Tragopogon porrifolius or Salsify.

        If I still had an allotment I would probably have given it a try, but now my veg patch is in my garden and not huge.

        The root is good, as is Scorzonera (also known as Salsify and is black).

        Similarly is the less rampant Petroselenium crispum (better known as Hamburg turnip rooted parsley) and the leaves are good in salad as well as the root being edible (excellent in soups and stews as well as raw). This is a biennial but easier to grow as an annual.

        The Hamburg turnip sounds more tempting, especially with the leaves being edible.

        The Hamburg is much better in chicken soup than using ordinary turnip. :blue thumb:
