:doh:I was a 30 a day smoker for years and i stopped smoking in 03, but i have had minor lapses usually when on holiday, the last time was 05,

Anyway my OH was admitted to hospital yesterday (nothing too major) and as i was driving home i thought :cnfs: ,i fancy a cigarette, so i stopped and bought 10 ,went into the park opposite the shop and lit up, it was horrid, :skp: and as any smoker knows ,the first is the worst, so when i got home i tried another one, i really had to force myself to finish it :flag:, when i went back indoors i felt quite sick , and it wouldnt go away and a couple of hours later ,i thought a third might help,:dh::dh: well, i only had 3/4 puffs and i had to throw it, i went indoors ran the tap onto the remaining cigarettes and mashed them up.

Dived in the shower and scrubbed my remaining teeth and mouthwashed, but, the smoke is still in my lungs, i can taste it at the back of my throat nearly 24 hrs later, i feel really ill , halls extra strong ,still there ,fishermans friend ,still there,

What can i do to get clean air into my lungs ,i am going for a walk now ,but have to stay near the phone in case hospital rings :help:

Pam, it`s a psychological addiction aswell as a physical one. You were under pressure, and it acted as a trigger to smoke. I too had stopped for nearly three years then just before Christmas I started again. My trigger-anger, I was blazing about something, and smoked. Didnt even think twice about it. Worst is that it wasn`t the first time it had happened.

The key is don`t panic-you will smoke again if you do. Pretend it never happened, pretend you don`t smoke-use your imagination and pretend as hard as you possibly can. And don`t do anything out of the ordinary, it will trigger you again.

I wish you all the very best will in the world. I have to quit again, and I can`t believe I was so stupid as to resume in the first place.

Sorry to hear about OH Pamsdish, must be very worrying for you and can understand
    that you tried a smoke!

The good thing is that it made you feel sick even though you tried another and that
made you feel bad too. Remember that feeling if you ever think you will try another -
    it's called aversion therapy :thumb:

I gave up smoking many years ago for that very reason. I was feeling very hungry and
thought I'd have a smoke instead of eating. I felt really really horribly sick and I have
    never tried to smoke again.

Going for a walk should be good but I think the smoke will stay in your lungs for a while -
think of that if you are tempted again - best of luck - let us know how you get on :thmb:

    Hi GUys
Starting to feel better, and the smoke seems to be clearing my lungs, i just get the odd feel of it.

Went grocery shopping today ,and as everybody knows its impossible to go through supermarket doors ,without braving the smog of all the people who have been deprived of nicotine whilst spending 30 mins or so in the store. i was as bad.

Anyway i felt really nauseous as jjordie says its good aversion therapy, and claire you need to stop again think of all the plants you could buy for the price of 1 pack of ciggies

Oh I know all that Pam. Been there done that many times. I have quit and failed at least 10 times. Trying to gear up to another bash sometime in the next few weeks. It won`t be easy but never worthwhile ever is.

i went to Drs for something else and my B.P. was 190/130 and she couldnt understand how i hadnt had a stroke, she wouldnt let me out till it had come down,

so i tried patches again but in 10 years since i last tried them they have improved,
i went on Niquitin cq i think they were called and they worked this time ,

i still get the odd pang, re this weeks experience ,but honestly they have made me so ill i dont think i will go there again,

I stopped 4 months ago using hypnosis. Hardly had a craving apart from the odd one at even odder times. But 2 months ago I was in Ireland at a party and (whilst very drunk) had a couple of drags of a ciggie. The next morning the craving for more was quite intense (coupled with a killer hangover). So I know where you are coming from.

Be strong, be firm and don't beat yourself up over your lapse. It happened but it doesn't mean you're a smoker again. The aversion to the smell and taste is a great sign that you don't want to start smoking again. Remember, having a smoke won't make you feel better about any troubles you have or make things better. They'll still be there after the ciggie is finished.

Claire, you have to be in the right place to stop-I know, I stopped 3 or 4 times before this time. It has to be your decision and your sub conscious has to want to stop too. I was lucky, I stopped when I wasn't working so I didn't have the "going for a work break" association with smoking. Fingers crossed for you though and if it helps, put down what you feel when you have a craving here. Getting it out on "paper" is a real help sometimes.

    Cheers you wonderful peeps.

That`s what I am trying to do. Get myself in the zone, but ironically trying makes it worse. I can`t use patches because I am allergic to the adhesive on plasters-not just a bit of an itch or I`d just brave it out but blisters and burning. Tried hypnosis and whilst it made me feel calmer three months later I was at it again. Cold turkey...that` was fun-not. And then Zyban from the nhs quit smoking sessions I went to. That was the longest quit yet, I can`t imagine what totally braindead thought went through my head to make me smoke again. That insidious voice saying "go on, one can`t possibly hurt". What a prat!

As David said, you both have all of us here on GC to support you :gnthb:

Pam, taste and smell are very closely related and the lingering taste could be because of nicotine clinging to the small hairs in the nostrils. This will fade fairly soon. People that have lost their sense of smell have great difficulty in tasting most things. Just keep off them and the taste will go.

Good luck to both of you :) :luv:
