    hi all
new to the forum and new to gardening. haven't got a clue!
we bought a derelict cottage in the Scottish Borders 6 years ago and we've been restoring it. it came with just under half an acre of land. the weeds were six feet tall, full of nettles and brambles and what seemed like a million self seeded sycamore trees.
We cleared the site (mostly) and have done some hard landscaping, put down lots of turf and grass seed to keep the weeds at bay and i started a small veg garden which i hope to enlarge over the next few years. but we still have a long way to go,
most of our money has gone on the house, so i'm begging, borrowing and stealing (well, maybe not stealing exactly) plants, cuttings and seeds to get going.
I have soooooo many questions...... im really hoping you are all very knowledgeable and can help!

Hello there, and welcome to Gardeners Corner!

Sounds like you’ve got a lovely patch of land there. There’s no hurry with gardening, and the best gardens, IMHO, grow and develop over the years...

It also doesn’t have to be expensive, especially if you are growing some fruit and veg. If you are a little short of money/time/muscle power, concentrate on growing those things that you use, and are expensive, or hard to find in the supermarkets. A good example I think is mangetout peas. They are relatively easy to grow, don’t take a lot of time/space, and a handful of fresh sugar snap peas tossed into a salad transforms it!

Ooh, I'm so excited for you @ridgiemum, all sorts of potential and possibilities there now you've cleared everything! If you have lemons, you make lemonade. If you have a cottage in the Scottish Borders, why not make a splendid cottage garden to match it? :)
