Our resident pond frog is now confident enough to not bother hiding from us any more. Tonight it was just chilling out on a stone at the water's edge. I found a big juicy snail, and positioned said snail on the stone, literally 2 inches in front of the frog's face. At first nothing happened. Then after about a minute, the snail got curious, and went to investigate the frog. The snail actually stuck its face right on the frog's mouth. The frog didn't like that and hopped back and just stared at the snail. The snail progressed, at snail pace, towards the frog again, and again the frog took fright and jumped back.

I thought that was a bit strange.

You should provide the frog with a little pick so that he can pick the snail out of his shell.

Its not unusual to hear a random crunch in the garden at night, so something eats them. Could be a hedgehog but I've never seen one on my garden, nor heard the tell-tale rustle of them attempting to move about silently.

I'm sure frogs will eat slugs, but the shell on a snail would make things difficult I would have thought. What you need to do is provide a few flat stones dotted around your garden, close to where the snails congregate or hide for the likes of Thrushes who will use the stone to break the shell before enjoying their escargot. :)

I've just watched a good sized frog swallow a 10mm snail, shell and all. Suspect digestive juices are designed to cope. A bit of roughage always good.
Previously twice witnessed slugs being devoured. David Attenborough would be envious!!
