ID needed on what this is

    But what is it been on lots of websites but can’t find any definite ID, like is it a bee, wasp or hornet as it’s quite large over an inch.

      They do vary in size but maybe its a hornet.

      I looked at them but they tended to have 2 pincers at the front.

      Now you mention it someone was reporting seeing some pretty large hoverflies back in the spring.

      The hoverfly I've seen have always been relatively small things of about 8-10mm.

      Could it be Volucella zonaria. The largest hoverfly in the UK about an inch long. See here for pictures Volucella zonaria | NatureSpot
      I've seen it in my garden a couple of times.
      Whereabouts are you @jimcubs as it is mainly seen south of the Wash Severn line.

      Although I was initially sceptical of it being a HF because the hfs I see are always small things of approx. 10mm.
      But the American Hoverfly looks close to yours... however I don't know how it fares size-wise? and there's the awkward issue called geography.

      Have a look at. Laphria flava. L. 16-25mm If that's it. It is known as a Robber fly.
