    Hi folks,

Put on my gardening hat today and try and get on top of the maintenance.

I moved in last year and have no idea what half the stuff is in my garden, or where to start with it. Hope to develop an understanding this year.

Would appreciate if someone could be so kind to identify these two trees (?) so that I can research what to do with them, thank you in advance.

The second one down is a rose, with last years hips still on it.

Thank you for the speedy reply, lets me do some homework about how to get it into shape for this year (and the years to follow).

        Hi,

The Red Robin can be easily cut back to whatever size you want, its a fast grower and an established plant like that will easily put on one or two foot of new growth each year.
Cutting back now will mean you loose the effect of the new years red shoots.

As for the Rose, not sure what type it is, being so large and freestanding like that ?
Until you know what type it is, its hard to say how best to prune it.
I would say cut off the hips as if they stay on it might think its done its job and stop growing/flowering this year.

Hopefully one of the rose Gurus will see your pics and advise what type it is.

Good morning @Rikki McNeill my friend your Rose needs to be cut down by half at least and needs tidying up,(ie remove dead canes and any crossed canes which are crossing each other)the Rose hips are from last year probably because they the spent blooms (Flowers)were not removed,it you require any further advice would it be possible for you to post some more images of your Rose

          1. Remove any dead, diseased stems with sharp clean secateurs.
          2. Prune out any crossing stems to form an 'Open Goblet' shape.
          3. Cut back 1/3 of previous years growth to an outward-facing bud.
          4. Always mulch afterwards to ensure the Rose is well fed to recover.

            Ah fantastic, thank you.

This gives me some confidence to trim it back a bit.

Now seeing a better view of your border, like your first picture, they do seem very close to each other and a bit out of balance with the other plants.....?

We had a Red Robin, nearly as big as yours but similarly found it was in the wrong place, so about this time of year, we reduced all branches by about a third so with was more compact, and then dug 1.5 - 2ft around the stem to create a rootball, then lifted it out and moved it to a new home.
It did drop most of its leaves, but by the end of the summerit was back in full leaf, you would not know it had been moved.

As for the Rose, looks too nice and happy to even consider moving, though Woos the expert there..

I have spent yesterday cutting back both the Rose and the Red Robin and both look a lot happier.

Think I will see how the grow in this year (and also see if anything else appears from the borders) and then likely move the tree next year.

Going to be a lot of observation this year to work what I have got out there!

                  Thanks again for the input.
