Hi all, is there any way to block these calls so bothersome during the whole day. I have gone down the BT route but did not make any difference. I don't want to take the phone off the hook as fam may ring. I do speak to them sometimes and give them a load of total rubbish but they still call. Any ideas welcome.

You could try one of these, quite pricey but total control over your incoming calls.

Before caller displays were available, family would let the phone ring 3 times, hang up and then call back, that way I knew it was someone I wanted to speak to.

TPS worked for me for a while but then the calls started to creep back, not as bad as they used to be, though.

Registering with the TPS will cut down on unwanted calls but will not stop the overseas callers or scammers.

It stopped the vast majority of overseas marketing calls to my home but the odd one still gets through. If you look at the TPS FAQ http://www.tpsonline.org.uk/tps/contactfaq.php there is a section on overseas marketing calls many of which are stopped by TPS depending on the origin of the company, not all admittedly, but I found it cut down pesky calls dramatically. Plus the scammers stopped for the most part as well. Not 100% solution, but better than nothing and it is FREE which is nice.

On a related subject, I used to get nuisance phone calls to my mobile - marketing, PPI, Indian call centres - annoying but what really bugged me was having to pay to listen to their daft messages on my answer services if I didn't pick the call up. I just got my provider to disable the answer service completely and that works for me.

We used to do the same Zigs, now caller display but the fact it rings is a pain. I am often talking to friends (elderly, well over 60, acoustic guitar folk) and it is very disruptive in the middle of a song or recording. Fam ring usually evenings. I will look into the suggestions TPS and truecall.
It would be great if ones provider got it sorted BT in my case.

I have been registered on the TPS for quite a few years. But the call spam is getting through more and more over the last 12 months . I am always polite to them , it must be a hard way to earn a living , I just say no thank you and put the phone down.

As other's have said, TPS is the way to go.

After registering with the TPS (and you need to make sure you register every year or two because they drop your details off the list after a certain time), whenever you get a cold call, keep them on the line long enough for them to tell you which company they are, and then lodge an official complaint. Details of how and who to can be found on the TPS site.

Just having my lunch today and I got an 0800 number call me.
Turned out to be someone in India? working for Virgin.

The call went on for about 10 mins even with me showing very little interest or even saying much, basically because I couldn't understand what she was trying to sell me.

I think it was to do with mobile phones but couldn't be sure.
I also think she said she would call me back next week, but I cant think why, I only said about 6 words in all.
Virgin are wasting their time, and mine, using these people.

Amazingly I got a call this evening from a magazine. I had given a total rubbish survey to the Indian gentleman yesterday. This made not difference the mag lady offered me £20 free petrol and a months supply. At that point I said no thanks but you can see how it works. Just before this a chap wanted to help me with a claim for working in a noisey factory ...so even the rubbish gets through. I usually pick up and put back down so back to that for the mo. TPS will be my next move.

Just looked at optoutuk, looks like a fee of £30 a year to block your calls.
