No, not talking about the bf, but about this weird pop up that has started appearing when I try to log in to ebay.

When the login page comes up I get a yellow box purporting to be from Microsoft saying it wants to run Silverlight.exe.

This is new, for a week or two it's been something called Biometrics.exe that has been seeking permission to open external content on my laptop. I've always clicked Don't allow (it's ignored me when i click the box telling it not to show me again). This time it is causing the screen to freeze so I haven't been able to log on to ebay at all. (Argh, cold turkey!!)

What the heck do I do?

Not exactly an 'intrusive pop up', but that subject title appears as if it could be responsible for adds like this appearing whilst viewing this thread

I installed a Chrome add-on called AdBlock Plus. It came highly recommended and seems to be doing a good job of keeping ads under control on my machine. I installed it because some of the ads are badly written code-wise, and cause the machine to grind to a halt.

But, first we need to see if there's a real issue. Malwarebytes comes highly recommended. There is also an app called 'HijackThis' which checks to make sure your browser isn't being redirected through a dodgy server on its way to the intended page.

A full virus scan would also be wise. Best to run a scan with the machine booted in Safe Mode (press F8 in the early stages of starting up to get the Windows boot menu to appear, and choose Safe Mode from there). Running your virus scan in Safe Mode ensures that cleverly written malware can't do anything to defend itself while the scan is running.

As mentioned above Malwarebytes is pretty good at finding and getting rid of nasties.

So do you think it's definitely fake then? I googled it and realised there is a genuine Winows Silverlight.

There is a Windows Silverlight , it is some kind of graphics or font application. If you are getting the unwanted Popup I would run the software above

Silverlight (the genuine Windows one) has been part of Windows for some time now, so as far as I'm aware, it doesn't need permission to run because it is a core part of the system.

Thought I'd cured it but now it's at it again.

Silverlight adds some kind of interactivity to what you're viewing, I think and the Biometrics think is to do with fingerprint recognition.
