    Hi,

I've been getting some really helpful tips on here and great advice from Liz but I could could do with some further advice on the subject of scarifies. It looks like the start and end of the season is a good time to do this and I'm therefore looking to buy one. By the looks of it the petrol ones are quite expensive possibly overkill for a my lawn (100 m2 front and 120m2 rear). It's a flat lawn which current has brown patches appearing but I'm guessing that would be due to too much thatch and moss throttling the grass from growing like it should.

Please could you let me know your thoughts on these as I'm looking to buy the electric one this week and giving it a go. It comes with two different attachments which I wondered what you thought too?

    Thanks for your help.

Personally I would avoid the Weilbang.
If you want a petrol one you need to stick to known manufacturers like Hayter, John Deere, Eliet and the likes where they have a proven track record and spares are readily available.
Hayter have a fixed blade machine and you can normally get a deal going from your local dealer and yes petrol or a half decent one will do a better job depending on its setup but you need to weigh up the cost.

With apologies to Liz the pot and Zola, I have removed the links in their post due to our policy of commercial links of recommendations not being posted by newly joined members until a probationary period has passed. Lorea is a long standing member of 3 years and therefore is able to post links without question. Again my apologies.

Thanks guys. Liz is it the Hayter SP36 petrol machine with 15 fixed cutting blades that you are referring to?

The weibang I mentioned had swing tip blades so I'm guessing you're advising against it over the fixed one?

Do you think a cheap electric one will do the trip be good enough or would you suggest investing in a solid blade blade one?

I want to order something for this weekend so I can give it a good go and the over seed once a I've dragged out the moss and thatch.

            Thanks

It's a hard one because I do it for a living and so I want to supply the best service I can.
Fixed blades can cut in to the soil to promote grass growth, free swinging can't but they are good at avoiding damage if you hit something. Fixed blades need a good engine with the ability to keep it going as it works away so not all fixed blades are equal.
They are not cheap, ok if you have money to part with but personally I can only recommend the Eliet and that's over a Grand and not worth you spending that on just your lawn.
I think you should try the electric one and see how you get on. If you don't like it then sell it on and then think about a better machine.
Don't forget you can hire them so if you did want to try a petrol one you could this way.

Did you machine come with a cable or what sort of cable will I need to buy? I'm hoping it will stretch around 15-20m if possible?

I am not sure we are speaking about the same machine anymore as my suggestion has been censored, sorry!

Haha yes..... that may or may not be the one :snork:

For me it came with a fairly generous cable, but I still daisy chained all my extension leads just to make sure it had enough length. It depends how long your garden is really.

I'd say they give you about 10-15m, but I didn't measure it.

Thanks. Some reviews say it doesn't come with a cable that's all. You bought yours recently I'm guessing as it looks like this is something they have addressed/fixed. I'm just trying to see if I need to order a cable today so I can do the work this weekend that's all.
