A solicitor has asked me if I could photocopy my drivers licence and birth certificate for a third party. They said it must be colour. I happily agreed but was told at the library that It's illegal to make colour copies of such documents  :what:

If it is, it would have to do with the fact that they can be mistaken for the real thing if somebody is not experienced.

When you see copies of notes for example, you will notice that it says "specimen" across.

    Their just covering themselves Hydro:thumbsup:

I'm pretty sure that it is illegal to use an un-authorised copy of those documents to prove your Identity so yes technically. however if you showed the 3rd party your document and then they photocopied it as proof of seeing it then that is allowed

    very odd:rolleyespink:

That's my understanding of common practice, that the original must be presented as proof, but a copy can be taken for records, probably initially based upon this guidance:

        http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/documents/information-management/copying-bmd-certificates.pdf

But that appears to have been superceded/clarified by further advice:

Gosh, I regularly send p/c of my birth certificate, nursing registration documents and driver's license with job applications. No way am I parting with the originals. Might never get them back!

I would be asking why would a solicitor want colour photo copies of these documents for a third party.

When I was buying my house, I had to present the originals of such docs to my solicitor. She told me she'd be copying them. She said it was to prove my identity so that someone couldn't buy the house in my name without me knowing.:what:

No wonder the Conveyancing study notes were the thickest of all the College law notes by far, if they have to learn bullpoo like that!

What on Earth was she talking about????????
