    Morning Chaps,

One of the little Patio Roses I bought earlier this year has 3 buds. I've never seen anything like it, and the Rose Expert book I have doesn't have anything like it either. Can someone please tell me whether :

    a) It's diseased
    b) It's a new variety or
    c) If it IS a), shuld I burn it ??

It looks as if it has leaves growing out of the centre of each bud!

    Many thanks

Thanks youngdaisydee, - tell you the truth I can't WAIT to see what they're like when they open! My 'sick rose' thought though, I think might be right. The leaves don't look too clever either...

I had one similar on Maiden's Blush and Alba, see my post "Strange Bud" last week.

Don't think it's serious, I cut mine off when I was dead heading.

I think it´s a mutation that occurs sometimes. Rosa viridiflora has a flower entirely composed of small leaves. It is very strange, and it smells like ground black pepper (not kidding, I had one). This was a mutation detected and fixed in 1851, if I remember right. And sometimes you can even have a second rose growing from the centre of the first flower (Rosa gallica? prolifera). These mutations affect the look of the flowers (sometimes all the flowers, sometimes just a few), but are not dangerous in any way, to my knowledge. If all the flowers are like that and you don´t like it you get rid of the plant (free to good home?), no need to burn it. No witchcraft involved me thinks. ;)

Might be a side effect of Aphids having a nibble, perhaps?

for your help. The whole plant looks pretty straggly, I'm wondering whether I should prune ALL of it to maybe 10" ? I'll be a little more specific. There is healthy new leaves and growth about 10" from soil. These 3 buds are on LONG stalks that are about another 16" above that. Well, above the healthy growth. What do you think please?

No, I haven't sprayed with anything other than Epsom Salts which is what everything else hd, ane they're not misbehaving!!!

Hi Springshere I would personally just prune the 3 longer stems which contain the said buds down to the same height as the new growth make sure its got plenty of water but I would not prune untill March just my personal opinion.
