I potted up a sickly looking Chocolate Vine last October. This has emerged ! Now I know its not a Chocolate vine , and is probably a weed I don't recognise. But it looks quite bushy , could it be a shrub that has self seeded?

    TIA

What does the foliage smell like if you rub it hardish?

I was wondering if it was a herb Salvia (Sage).

I did have a sage plant up to a couple of years ago . It does look similar to my mystery plant , but the sage leaf was a little different.

It's rather a huge genus (900+ species), so don't discount it.

If it's any sort of sage it's likely to smell of something, pleasant or otherwise, when the leaves are rubbed. Don't all the sages have square section stems, though?

In a word, no. I walked out the back door and checked the first seven species that I came to - only two were square stemmed. Couldn't be bothered to check the other fourteen species!
I'm growing a few with no noticeable scent to the foliage, but one (Salvia discolor) has foliage that smells of blackcurrant.
