In the last few weeks there has been lots of dog thefts, there seems to be chalk marks or cable ties or both outside a property which may have dogs to be stolen and some times reports of males looking into gardens

If you are offered a dog please check things carefully

Please watch out and becarefull and report things to the police

There was some thing on, I think, local news last night .
Police raided a traveller site and found drugs and a number of dogs.
      All thought to be stolen.

I think ours cost about £750 five years ago, but prices went to around £3,000 during lockdown and 'everybody' wanted a dog to take out on walks, but thought prices were falling with people going back to work.

Heard about dog thefts, but not about them also stealing their drugs now.

Sadly, the prices are not falling @Scrungee - as you know, we lost our wee furry earlier in the year and we would love to give a home to a new puppy (particularly a Golden Retriever if we could), but the prices for all dogs are just stupidly high - £3000 is still something of a starting price for them, and that is just not manageable for normal folks.

The real worry is how many dogs will have been bought by folks who are loaded, only for the dog to then be mistreated or neglected when they realise the amount of work and commitment that comes with an animal.

Dont think I would ever pay £3000 for a dog, that is a total rip off and if so called breeders are charging prices like that they should be ashamed.
No wonder the thieving has started and inflated prices by the so called elite breeders is what is fueling it.

Some people really are so stupid and inconsiderate sometimes. I sadly can foresee a time in the future when all the charity dogs homes will be inundated with unwanted pets because people are back at work or just get bored and no longer want the responsibility. The new saying....
Dogs are for life, not just for lockdown.

Just been talking to my sister on the phone, her and her husband are very much involved with a dog training club.
They have puppy classes and are inundated with people who have puppies and young dogs that are out of control, not socialised and impossible to live with.

Unfortunately puppies and Kittens have been bought/acquired in large numbers during lockdown as something to occupy themselves (and/or children) with and not necessarily because they actually wanted one.

As just mentioned by @ThePlantAssassin the result is now that many have gone back to work they don't want them and many have been abandoned or passed on to pet rescue centres.
Mrs S has seen this first hand at the animal sanctuary she helps at.

It seems to me that some people are now treating pets as a disposable item.

Our dog gets between 2 (rare minimum) and 6 walks a day, about 10 walking miles for us, plus about 2 extra running miles for dog, and we have further play times at home.

Dog has one of the most expensive pet insurances (but there's still excesses), plus a vet care plan with 2 visits p.a., plus worm/flea/tick meds, after those his feed costs are insignificant.

Still cheaper than when our daughter had riding lessons, equipment costs, riding hols, etc.

If anyone here ever hears or knows of someone who has seen their circumstances change and needs to rehome a dog in a bit of a hurry, please let me know as we have a good home here, ready and waiting. That also applies to bonded pairs/puppies and so on.

In an ideal world we would get ourselves a Golden Retriever pup or a GSD pup, but clearly the way things are now that is never going to happen. We are registered with Battersea etc, but believe it or not there is (thankfully, I suppose) a considerable waiting list - either way, we have always said (even when Smudge was still with us) that we would never see a dog abused or homeless when we have a perfectly comfortable and loving home here.

They are good to help build mobility purely because you know you have to take them for a walk regardless of how you are feeling.

Did you have any ops in the end?
