If you can't be bothered to watch all of this then start 12 minutes 50 seconds into it. They're counting down the top ten and that is number 5 - 1.

They do get a lot of very bad performers as well (deliberately allowed to get through to the competition because it's 'good TV'!) but some of the good ones make up for it.

        Some of them are amazing.

I suppose if they only allowed the good ones to take part it would be a very short programme.;)

They were all pretty good, but one or two had pitch issues in places and some others with long tones.

This is my all time favourite, from these sort of shows, particularly as she was only eleven at the time. Could bring a tear to your eye, if you've not seen it before.

              Mind you, things have changed.

In 1942 Sarah Vaughan, at eighteen, sang this at a contest at the Apollo in New York.
She won, her prize was $10 and a week's engagement.

              The rest is history.

A agree that some of the original ones were so bad that it was more of a comedy programme. with the better ones, most are OK but not really worth watching. The exceptional ones are worth it but I wait for someone to send me a youtube link.

Sarah was one of the greatest. I saw her perform over here - in the early 80s I think it was. The Knebworth Jazz Festival with chuck Berry and Ella. :dbgrtmb:

It's only half an hour's drive from me. :)

What is not so well known was that she was an accomplished jazz pianist and had classical music tuition as a child. She was also known amongst musicians as "Miss Perfect Pitch" for her singing ability.

I mentioned the inability of some contemporary singers to hold "long tones."
This is something that brass and reed instrumentalists have to master.

Those who can also sing, demonstrate that ability.

These girls from the Catalonian St Andreu Jazz Orchestra, always impress me with their mastery of their instruments as well as being able to sing.

                  from left to right.

                  Any saxophone you like.
                  Alto/soprano sax & trumpet.
                  Double bass
Trombone (she was fifteen at the time, the rest were around twenty)

                  Here's more.

                  They start young

Alba Armangou at the age of nine

                  But grow up quick

                  At fourteen.

The most well known and accomplished

                  Andrea Motis at sixteen.

Moody's Mood, is a well known jazz song based on the chord structure of "I'm in the Mood for Love," but the vocal is a copy of James Moody's saxophone solo, from back in the fifties. Very hard to sing. she's about nineteen here.

                  On alto sax at eighteen

Then there's Eva Fernandez, from the same college, she's twenty-one.

Now branching out with her own group
