Some of my roses (Sceptre'd Isle in particular) are heavy with blooms at the moment and some of the stems are hanging right over the side of the container. I need something to keep them in a more upright position, so am looking for suggestions from my ingenious GC buddies

I know you can get special frames, so would appreciate any recommendations, but (knowing how good at improvisation gardeners are) is there anything else I could use which I'm likely to have in my greenhouse?

I've never thought about having roses in containers so not experienced the problem. If they are drooping all round the container then a loop of twine around the whole plant might let them support each other. Or, for an unusual effect, a pole in the middle of the container and colourful tape fixed to the top and coming down like a maypole to each branch.

Or water it with viagra dissolved in the water :heehee:

Would the Viagra keep the plant erect? :heehee:

I've just been Googling and found hoop top edging as a suggestion. I have a roll of this laying about unused, so I could easily cut it to size and then make a wrap around for each plant

I had a look at some of the metal ones and they are way too expensive! :thud:

i use those bright yellow circular things from Wilkos cane in the centre and as the plant grows you lift it up the cane,it disappears into the plant as it develops and only 1 pound or so for 3 .

Aye, wire coat hangers will do it. Make one end a straight to stick in the middle of the pot and the other a horizontal circle to poke the roses through. May need longer wire if they're masses of them

I use Link Stakes. Same as Wire Coat-hangers though ... I just pay extra for the nice dark green power-coating finish!

What is wrong with good old cheap bamboo
ONE placed at the back, then raffia tie around the plant

Can look a bit "forced" Jack. A horizontal rod (bent coat hanger, or expensive Link Stake!!) lets the plant flop a bit and be constrained in a non-uniform fashion, thus looking more natural.

Well, that's that my womenfolk tell me ...
