My lawnmower just gave out on me so after a bit of help please. Was running fine, left it idling while I went to empty grass box, returned and hit the throttle which killed the engine. Got it restarted and the powered roller works but any time you engage the rotary blade the engine dies.
It feels like a fuel blockage or something clagging the blades but can't see anything.
What should we be looking for?

What lawnmower are you using Loofah ? No grass grass wedged between the blade and the deck ?

Oh heck, it's a sarp slm 5360 hxr, which is an incarnation of a Honda model. Hoofing great thing it is and needs a good clean, but no apparent debris catching anywhere

Is the blade release control somehow fouling the carb/throttle?

Generally running fine but tricky to restart after the throttle kills the engine. I don't understand why the powered roller works fine but the blades don't. Might have to remove some parts to see if there's something clagging up the works

I'd take the bowl off the carb ( easy job to do ) and see if it got bit of dirt etc inside it, if it has a clean of the carb and jets is acquired .

You could look at the blade brake system and see if the blade turns free . If I remember correctly turn the mower on its side not running ( air filter facing up ) engaged the blade to drive and move the blade with your other hand the blade should be free and easy to move.

Further down near the carb, there will be an idle adjustment screw on the spring loaded butterfly flap, if the blade control cable is catching that might cause it to stall.

Will do. It looks pretty accessible thankfully! I tried turning the blades yesterday and they were pretty stiff but I hadn't engaged the drive so will double check...

Will have a look for it :)

Is it wrong that this is more fun than cutting the grass? I'm quite enjoying looking at all the engine diagrams! :)

On my Honda the blades drive direct from the motor, and then a pulley under the blades drives the self propel with a belt.
Because the roller turns normally, I'd be inclined to suspect a jammed blade brake as suggested earlier.

Blade assy looks to be OK. I've pulled the throttle and the rotor spins OK; have also disassembled and no blocks or breaks seen.

Can't get it started now so going to look at the carb. Did start on this but lots of fuel spurted out so stopped straight away. Have since realised there should be a shut off lever in there somewhere!
