After seeing Roders photos on the other thread about Lily Beetles I thought I would add mine so that members can see from other members photos what they are up against, although hopefully now the worst is over and all squishing has been done.:D

Roders, not trying to detract from your great thread but didn't want to add my photos to your thread without your permission...:)

This is an adult and the damage that they can do...
This is some of the eggs after hatching and the damage caused to the leaves as the larva start off tiny and then start to grow...

This is the start of the damage the tiny larva do as they munch through the lily leaves...
These are the larva hidden in the poo that is formed to hide the head and body of the larva as they do their destructive work...

I caught these beetles mating one evening as I did my rounds of my plants...

 I have put a sticky on it Kandy & Robert as it is such a good & informative thread Kandy with excellent photos that everyone who grows lilies will be interested in...

As you can see I have also cleaned the thread to keep it positive for everyone as it deserves... I hope you all agree..
              Cheers
              Marley.. :)

Well, I like everyone else wages a war on the Red bugs every year and I have found they still survive into this month although my Lilies were finished months ago. However, I have found them on Canna, Monarda, Japanese Anemones and the like....not in great numbers but enough to show that they can actually fly to other plants and be happy. I usually get them as they're sitting in a deck chair, wearing sunglasses, sunning themselves on a leaf:heehee:

Hate the little blighters, they decimate (or worse) my lilies.

But don't get them confused with the Cardinal Beetle http://www.uksafari.com/cardinal.htm which is a good predator insect.

They look very similar but Cardinals have a red head, and Lily beetles have a black head, plus Cardinals are longer and slimmer looking.

Normally anything round a lily plant is a lily beetle - also I think Lily Beetles are about and eating your plants a little earlier than Cardinal Beetles appear.

to be honest that looks like a lily beetle on your link , it stands little chance in our gardens

                  Hi Dave
                  http://www.rhs.org.uk/science/plant-pests/lily-beetle
They overwinter just like ladybirds in leaves, soil, under stones etc , as you have found out , the only good thing is they are bright red , we will all start having a good tidy up I think

I know what you mean Spruce - its really just the head that is different, plus the lily beetle seems a bit shinier and redder (and always mating !!!!!)

And the Cardinal Beetles are not round the lilies so much but more mooching round the garden

Anything which eats pests is fine by me so I try to leave the Cardinals. :)

To be honest I never terminate any bug without making sure it is what I think it is!!!
Sue's right that, in haste, the Cardinal Beetle is similar in looks to the Lily Beetle and could pay the price for that.;) However the Cardinal Beetle is a predator and does good as does the Lady Bird larvae but that sometimes gets squashed by gardeners not knowing what it is.:coffee:
