I just followed a link that someone had included in a message and found I was logged out. Their link included the "WWW" and when I use the site I don't.

If this applies to everyone (cookies not shared/shareable between "www" and "plain") then might that explain why some people get logged out all the time - maybe they log in on WWW and then when they post they get redirected to "plain" and become logged out?

Long shot ... but thought I'd mention it.

Erm, I identified this over a month ago and asked about it on the 'Login problems' thread. Got completely ignored;)

Another way of getting into www.gardenerscorner is to inadvertently use www when performing a Google site search, which although it sounds glaringly obvious as I type, I'm sure I've been sloppy in the past and used www in lieu of http:// as it seemed to work

Sorry, didn't realise it had been raised before. I've never had a problem being logged off, as others have reported, so having encountered it thought it might be related.

When we have both WWW and "Plain" sites we redirect one to the other, so that all users arrive in one (or other! but not both). That might be worth considering.

Either that or maybe there is some link somewhere, in the HTML code, to "www" and folk are getting logged out when they encounter that link.

I think a silent redirect from "www" to "plain" might be best? Or at the least prevent Google from spidering "www" and only let is spider "plain"

In IE, if you log in without the www (or with it, can't remember which way round it is), it redirects to the other, thus bouncing you straight back out. Chrome behaves a bit better, but still misbehaves if you do as in Kristen's example. Examining the cookies that GC generates (there are about 6), some are bound to www.gardenerscorner.co.uk, some have a wildcard allowing either with or without the www. Or at least that was the case before the latest updates.

            Just to be awkward! :heehee:

I tried both your links above:
the first just reloaded this tab to the same page
the second loaded a new tab in the same window and took me to this page
            Neither logged me out
            I'm using IE 9

My guess would be you are logged in on both - at some point in the recent past you have been redirected to WWW, found you were not logged in, then logged in and now ... you are still logged in on both.

Quite likely :blue thumb:. I never bother to log out as I can't see any reason to do so. I only log out of sites that have important personal data and, as they are secure sites, they would log me out automatically after five minutes of no activity.
