I have struggled to get logged on since the forum upgrade. I’ve noticed one or two members mentioning it in other threads too, e.g.

Just in case this is preventing members old and new from logging in I’ll explain what I know about it.

If you get your password wrong you get the screen below and have to enter an image verification code:

The fuzzy text/coloured background on the image has defeated me a few times, you get 7 attempts it says.

I’ve found that it’s best to keep pressing the ‘Refresh’ button until you eventually get a readable combination of text and background.

Nathan/Admin: If you have time then could you look into this?

As I understand it the problem is a clash between the new forum colours and the CAPTCHA scheme (the signon Image verification process), making it difficult to discern the text characters. I think you can use
reCAPTCHA II to replace the default CAPTCHA used by MyBB. This has more settings for the style/colour that best matches the forum theme, and a ‘Speaker’ button which speaks the letters for the visually impaired. It’s also more secure.

Hopefully the following link will make some sense: http://mods.mybb.com/view/recaptcha

    Thank you for that JWK.
I'm glad to see you are logged in now and I'll flag it up for the Webmasters attention.

Bit of a tangent, but I am a fan-boy of reCAPTCHA

If you will indulge me a moment:

CAPTCHA is the name some Geeks (presumably, but it could have been the Romans :D) came up for those fumy distorted images of some letters that you have to type in - the distortion defeats machines, and thus, in theory, proves that you are a Human. They can be blinking hard to read though.

Some bright spark came up with the idea of using this as a mean of also doing "some other" work.

So reCAPTCHA (now owned by Google) was born. It shows you two words which are distorted. They are usually normal words, which also makes it a bit easier than the picture that JWK shows above.

There are two words. One of them reCAPCHA already knows what it is, and you have to get that right. The other one is taken from a project which is scanning books etc.

Books are scanned and some software (called "OCR") is used to convert the scanned image into text (so that it can be indexed / searched etc), but despite years of effort OCR software is still not perfect. Where the OCR software is not 100% sure that it has got it right the word has to be checked.

The sort of mistakes that OCR makes:

So the "bright spark" had the idea of including the failed OCR words in reCAPTCHA. Of the two words you have to type in one is a word that failed the OCR process. That image is offered to several people, if they all give the same answer then "that" must be correct.

reCAPTCHA is reputed to help the digitizing of books by processing 100,000,000 image verification requests a day !

So each time you are asked for one, and you see it is reCAPTCHA, give yourself a little pat on the back, instead of cursing!, because you are helping with a noble project.

I have no problem logging in, although I've never had to bother for the last five years.

Now I get a log in page, and its already got a password filled in, god knows what it is, it also says "username" but I ignore that and just click "log in".

I then get a page that says "welcome Pete" and under that it says, "error, you have used an incorrect username or password".

I still get in, so something must have got fouled up.

I had problems at the changeover and couldn't log on for a day or two but it was because of the accent on my name ... but I contacted Admin and they removed it and there are no problems now, but I stay logged in.

Marley; the problem for me is not being able to read the "Image Verification Code" as per my first post above. The Code is just too fuzzy. The example on the screen shot above shows how difficult it is to read. I have reasonable eye sight but cannot make it out, is the text "tFpFG" or "tFppC"?

I am looking into the login issues, but I would like to just mention, the 'Captcha' characters are NOT case sensitive.

I will be looking into it more though.

I dont log in. Once you are on GC just add it to your favourites.

Then in future all you have to do is click on to your favourites

then onto GC and it brings you straight here.

Ive always done it this way. Hope this helps.

I don't know if this will help some of you but when i go to log on to the forum the box for the password under the user name box already has the black dots filling the box.If I just click on log in then the error message with how many attempts i have left comes up.If though, I delete all the black dots and untick and then retick the remember me box and then try again by typing in my password i get logged in with no problems.

Hope this is of some help to anyone with problems.....

Just a thought (I know ziltch! about MyBB), can you see some sort of failed-logins report / list?

That might give you an indication of whether there are any people who have tried to get back in, but failed - notwithstanding that there IS a Contact Us link at the bottom of the page with your Email address :thumb:

I just tried logging off and back on again a few times. I didn't have any problems today, I didn't get the "Image Verification" screen either. So either you have fixed it or I'm getting better at typing. I'll be keeping myself logged in as others suggest for the time being, so for me the problem has been solved.

    Thanks.
