south africa would be a good start .... airfares are pretty steep though ... don't think you will find any gold in the UK unless you use a metal detector to find artifacts

You can pan for gold in north wales and Scotland. There was a goldmine in Scotland working till a few years ago, I believe they are going to reopen it now that gold has hit an all time high.

Gold is precipitated out of the molten roots of a mountain chain so any rivers coming off of granite rocks, Dartmoor, and as John said.

I read about that, but unfortunately, the gold is deep below the ground, so you would need to 'tunnel' and dig deep and you would need a hardhat with a light and an oxygen back pack and an overall with safety boots

I think the OP was thinking about following a stream/river in the UK, panning for gold on the banks and getting rich?

It is actually an enquiry on behalf of my sister in Italy (she is an oil/watercolour artist you see and she just does not see normal jobs!).

Gold forms at the top of hydrothermal veins percolating up from the molten rock Batholith) at the base of mountain chains, below that, other metals precipitate, silver, copper, zinc etc., I forget the exact order but tin is the last.

When the Batholith rises as the roots of the mountains push up due to hydrostatic adjustment as the mountains are eroded, Gold is the first metal to be washed down from the mountains.

Cornwall had a tin industry as the Mountain range that was there was very old, only the roots and the tin remained.

But gold is very heavy and can still be found as not all of it was washed out to sea, some lodged in pot holes and crevases in the rivers. More in Wales and Scotland as the ranges there are still being eroded.

:D:thumbsup: If I could only remember the stuff i've forgotten:DOH:

Did some gold panning on Dartmoor a few years back, didn't find any, but the kids were younger then and attention spans don't last that long.

Well you would need to come up to Scotland, then pan in the rivers, at the opposite side of the bend

I thought in Scotland Whisky was known as Gold.

A guy once told my OH:-"I'll Nae put Watter in my Whisky. It Yae want Watter in it, Yerl put it in Yersell". This was followed by him shoving a jug of water across the table at her.

        I think she upset him!
