    Hi

Taking advantage of the web to increase my knowledge and pick your brains.

The best thing I do in a garden is cutting things down (uneducated pruning?), shredding and composting. I have had a compost heap since I got married and buying our first house over 30 years ago. This despite one of my current neighbours trying to whip up local objections "because it attracts rats".

I have a 150 ft garden that I am only gradually getting under control, work then ill health has prevented me from doing more. Now I find it is motivation I sometimes lack - it just looks too big a job and when I concentrate on one area another gets out of hand.

I have some specific questions but will post these where appropriate.

    Neil

Hello Neil, provided you don't put cooked kitchen waste or meat into the compost then vermin should leave it alone. They do like the heat though and I often find mice and rats nests in mine, I've been told to put chicken wire underneath to stop them.

I suggest for a garden that size to plan for low maintenance and just do a little area at a time. It might take a few years but you will get there in the end.

Hi Neil and welcome. When you add to your compost chuck a can of water on top. It helps with the breakdown of the compost and definitely discourages vermin. As regards the "motivation". Maybe sort out the priorities. Have a rough idea of how you want it to look. Do one bit this year. Keep the grass etc. under control in the rest of the area. When you're on top of that bit (hoeing etc.) do another bit. Keep going back to the bits that you've done to keep them under control, then do another bit. Always go back to the bits that you've done and keep them under control before you start anything else. Unless you can get groundforce's help you'll have to do it yourself. It takes time but at least you'll be satisfied with the bits you've done.:) Good luck.

    Hi Neil
Perhaps a little roundup?? so sorry to offend the oranic peeps!

I also lack motivation, so I try writting a numbered list of all the different smallish jobs which need doing (it will probably get a bit long!) and then on a good day pick the one job which suits my mood and proceed to the battle ground! I then feel great if I can cross off just one item from my seemingly impossibly long list.

I then reward myself with .... (whatever takes yer fancy)
Hope this might help a bit??
