You may have heard about the extra six months being given for M.O.T.'s. The government said that there will be an extension to all of them.

The automatic extension is supposed to occur about a week before the renewal. So if, like a lot of people, your tax is due at the same time you will need to check whether the extension has happened.

You can phone the DVSA (not DVLA) on 0300 123 9000 and choose option 2 and then a second option 2. Or you can go to gov.uk/check-mot-status

the normal MOT reminder service has been suspended so if you normally get a reminder you won't be getting it for now.

The full info from the government here

Your vehicle will still have to be maintained and road worthy

We had ours done last week, there were a couple of snags that I didn't know about so it was worthwhile. The garage was very well organised with strict social distancing and appointment time to drop off and pick up. The courtesy car was sanitised. I just wish it was so well organised normally, rather than the usual rugby style scrum of customers hanging around.

I had mine done last week with my usual annual service.
Couldn't see the point of having to get it done later.

You can also see your cars MOT history and the new +6 month expiry date, on the GOV site below.
The Mitsubishi is due for a full service and MOT. My garage is just over 1 mile away, I am hoping they can collect and deliver my car. Have service garages been working over the shutdown, or when did they start operation?

The one I used,a small independent, has been working all the time during the lockdown.

People aren't daft - they know that if everyone takes up the 6 month extension - the test centres are going to be heaving when their MOT is eventually due.

Some info. from a survey of drivers:

Just 14 per cent of the 2,200 drivers surveyed between May 17 and 24 said they will use all the extra six months automatically added to MOT due dates, and 44 per cent plan on getting their car checked as normal.

Of the drivers who don’t plan on using the full MOT extension, more than half – 52 per cent – cite wanting to ensure essential safety checks are carried out at the right time, while two-fifths are confident their cars are in good working order and want them to pass their MOTs as soon as possible.

However, 16 per cent say they are ensuring their MOT tests are carried out sooner rather than later because they fear there will be a huge backlog as the lockdown eases further.

I think so, I had my car serviced at the same time. It must done within a certain time to keep within warranty, also would make it difficult to sell in future if the service book stamps are missing.

Mrs Shiney's car has done 4 miles since March! Apart from checking the tyres and battery I don't think it would have worn out much :heehee:

Luckily got new battery charger last year, I had to charge the battery once.

Today's top tip - petrol starts to go off after 2-3 weeks - the longer it is the more difficult it is to start the car. So at least run the engine and top it up with fresh fuel :dbgrtmb:

Well you learn something every day, never thought petrol had a shelf life. Blurb below from the RAC on petrol and diesel.

"Probably not as long as you think. Once you’ve put fuel in a container you only have a few months before the quality starts to fall away – even less if the fuel is contaminated in any way.

Generally speaking, petrol has a shelf-life of six months if stored in a sealed container at 20 degrees – or just three months if kept at 30 degrees. The more it's exposed to heat, the more quickly it will go off.

If the container isn’t tightly sealed, you’ll be able to keep it for even less time and there’s increased fire risk due to flammable vapours escaping

As for diesel, it can remain usable for between six and 12 months before becoming ‘gummy’ which, if used, can clog up filters and cause you issues with your engine."

Update:- they've moved the goalposts - for a change!

"If you’re a vehicle owner in England, Scotland or Wales, and the MOT for your car, motorcycle or van expires on or after 1 August 2020, you will be affected.

Your certificate will not be extended and you’ll need to book an MOT test as you would have done before lockdown.

If your MOT was or is due between 30 March and 31 July 2020, you will still be granted the full six-month extension. So if, for example, your MOT is due on 30 July 2020, you won’t need an MOT check until 30 January 2021. This applies to both MOT renewals and vehicles due their first MOT test in this period.

If your MOT expiry date was on or before 29 March 2020, you’re expected to book an MOT as usual.

If you’re eligible for the extension, you can still book an MOT check sooner if you wish. The government says that now more than 90% of garages are open across the country, but there is likely to be a surge in test bookings and you may face delays. So the government is encouraging drivers to book a test in advance."
