    Hi all,

Just popped around to the LIDL around the corner form my work. They're selling miniature garden roses for £3.99.

Has anyone had any success or disappointment with them?

    cheers

That will be fine, but it is a miniature rose 6" x 5" approx I would think round the rim of pot with something green and taller in the middle. :ideaIPB:

Whilst supermarket minis are OK for a short term colour fix you ought to remember that these are own root (probably micro-propagated) roses. Whilst perfectly fine in most cases, I grow a lot of miniature roses from cuttings, growing them on in pots carries the risk of them falling foul of severe weather. The roots tend to suffer from frost damage in pots, unless of course you give them some protection during the cold months. Once established in the ground however, they can be quite hardy in the same way as hardy fuchsias. The other drawback with supermarket minis is the fact that they are grown inside and because of this, rarely show any signs of disease. Once grown on, they can often exhibit all the classic rose nasties. Better bet is to buy a modern, bred for health, budded rose from a specialist nursery. They may be more expensive but should give ten years plus of healthy growth. Just my opinion of course. I will admit to having tried a few cheapy minis in the past but they really don't last long unless you bud them onto your own root stock. Just thought of another possible drawback; sometimes the mini that you buy is actually a chemically dwarfed rose that may eventually grow to larger proportions.

I bought a couple from Morrisons last year on offer (think I paid a couple of quid each) and there were four plants per pot, so I separated them into pots and they did quite well. Some of them will be going in the front garden this year. Pretty roses, cheap as chips :blue thumb:

I used general purpose compost with 1/3 John Innes No 3.

        Merleworld,
You ought to see the price of chips down our local chippy!:stirpot:
Everyone loves a bargain and if Morrisons' roses grow . . . enjoy them. I ought to fess up and admit that I also have three Morrisons bargains in the greenhouse that 'her indoors' brought home with the groceries a few weeks back.
