Everyone I speak to says it's impossible to get rid of mint once it's established. I long for this day...I love mint, but I just can't seem to keep it alive!

My current plant seems to have some kind of disease/parasite, can you advise how to get rid of it.

The stems of the plant have lots of tiny "things" on them. The things are about 1-2mm long and they look like a cross between a slug and a woodlouse. No legs and don't seem to be moving and when I flick them off they have a brown underside and you can burst them (yuk). They have made the stem close to the ground black. There are still healthy leaves, but I'm worried ti will get worse.

The plant is living in the conservatory.

    I hope you can help.

Not sure what the pest is. Mint does get mildew and rust towards the end of the summer, but not this early, that I've seen.

It doesn't need to be in your conservatory though - put it outside. They really are tough as old boots. I had it growing even in the depths of winter.

I bet if you planted it in the garden you'd be back in a couple of months complaining that it had now spread everywhere.

If all else fails, chuck it out and buy another one - they're available for a couple of quid.

Hi Kt & [IMG] .. I don't suppose you could put a picture up.. Not many things are interested in mint usually.. So not sure what they could be.. I would also make up a solution of washing up liquid & water & spray the little blighters I use a few drops in 1litre of water & it is surprising what that will kill .. Then as it is in the conservatory, I know it would be a shock to the plant but I would also put it outside in a bright but sheltered spot.. Mint usually grows outside.. If the tops are alright break them off & stand in a jar of water on a windowsil & they will soon put down roots & you can start again, but I would grow it outside in a pot if you like..

    Hi ktisathome .
I'd definately plant it outside, as Aaron says. I've found that keeping 'stuff' indoors that normally grows outdoors doesn't do so well.
    Cheers...freddy.
