Missing The Sound Of Moving Water

Hi everyone, I'm missing the sound of moving water in the garden so I've had this septic tank base from my neighbour it's 46" wide so I'm hoping to make an extra large bird bath with a copper acer tree water feature in the centre.

 

@mazambo I also have a little solar powered pump in my bird bidet. It is nice to hear the sound of water when there is enough light to run the pump. Some of these little pumps will even run when it is mostly cloudy too

Yours is going to be amazing at that size! Are you going to paint it a nice blue or ?

 

Only a small pool here but with water going through an old galvanised watering can. On a hot day, as CarolineL said, it’s nice to hear the sound of running water
(It’s been a project to do for the last couple of years but I want to make the pool much bigger.....maybe a job for this winter)

 

My initial idea is to box and frame it the same as the other two in the photo and fit it between them both then fill with large pebbles that decrease in size up the top leaving no more than a couple of inches for the birds to drink and bath and set the copper acer water feature in the centre, but as always that could change.

 

That sounds lovely. Our birds seem to like being in water up to their bums and then the splashing begins! Always fun to watch

 

A change of plan, the base has filled with water over time and the birds are drinking out of it, so I'm not going for a water feature as such, it's going to be a pebble pond with enough water for drinking and bathing (and no not for me) I'm thinking of using a pump for either a bubbler or something like a bit of copper pipe with a tap on, am I right in thinking height will give me a more water sound than the low bubbler type?

 

Probably give you more sound but if you have too much height it could splash

 

Pumps will only pump water to a certain height, depending on their flow rate and power. I have a couple of stainless steel tube pebble pools. The water bubbles out of a diffuser jet at the top and flows down the stainless steel. As Pete said you need to control the flow otherwise splashing will soon empty the sump.

 

Only thinking 18" -24" height, Have two pumps at the minute my old pond pump and a mini one someone gave me, don't like the look of the mini, and have a flow regulator for my pond pump, @pete understand what you're saying about splashing, have to think a little bit more about it.

 

18 to 24 ins, might sound like your running a bath,

 

I would expect more volume pumped to give you more sound, but if you have a cascade for it to tumble down then maybe more height would do the same. The small pump I have in our fountain has a variable speed knob (on the pump) so a pump that was over-spec would allow turning it down until "just right". For a small pump whatever it says for "max height" will mean "nothing comes out if the height is 1mm more than that so you will need a pump with quite a bit more height than you want, and then turn it down if the flow is too much.

 

Think the blagdon would fit the bill then.
