Hi guys, I have an old wooden coffee table that I want to use on my patio next year. My thought is to cover the top in coloured mosaic tiles. Has anyone any experience of doing this before? I thought it would be a nice indoor winter 'project'. My only worry is that come the frosts NEXT year, the grout will crumble and everything will crack and fall off!

I'm sure you can get outdoor grout. Google it! Other than that do you have a greenhouse you can store it in or garage?? Bring it in the house and keep plants on it.

Use white cement and sand as the grout.

No worries, don't forget to slap some cuprinol 5 star on it before you do the mozzaic. Make it last longer outside.

The main thing that comes to my mind is what is the top made of?

Is it solid timber, plywood or verneered MDF, for instance.

Most furniture, if mass produced, would not be suitable outside even with preservative.

If its solid timber the swelling and shrinking, that would take place outside, is likely to crack the grout I would guess.

Maybe a new top made of WBP or marine ply might be a good idea.
