You're giving me ideas al - I've got an old water tank in the loft (one of those with the big rivets at the corners), and I am now contemplating following your lead...... the only sticking point might be getting it out of the loft, as it looks mega heavy, and it might not even fit through the hatch!

Its also got a load of orangey looking residue in bottom - anyone know what this might be?

That looks fab al!! Did you plant the palm in the planter or is it in a separate pot sitting inside the planter? I have 3 of those tanks which I am using in the garden. 2 of them are painted and are on wheels and have small trees in them. The other one I used as a water feature for a while, no holes in that one. Hubby won't let me drill any holes in case the fish need a temporary home if the pond gets a leak and we raised our frog spawn in that one last year which turned out really useful. You would pay a fortune for a metal planter of that size!!

In the planter is a bamboo, a heuchera and a variegated grass. It's filled with 180 litres of compost and top soil.

The trachycarpus is just in the plastic pot it came in, and will probably be in there until late next year.

I priced a metal planter that size at the weekend, something similar was approaching £190!!!!!
