I'm busy with a pub garden and am planting a few fragrant shrubs .... am toying with the idea of planting daphne odora 'aureomarginata' between some roses ...

Maybe there is a nursery near you who may have them cheaper.

But they are a nice shrub.

But if the pub garden want plants surly they will pay.

Wow that daphne looks good. I can smell it from here. I am going to treat myself to one, one day. I think they are expensive because they are difficult to propogate.

Yes I have tried but never did manage.

But I often prune a stem and in a small vase an instant air freshener in my home Gazania.

Your's is lovely Kath, I'm very jealous, my Daphne is looking very poorly, no sign of flowers. I planted it last May and it's hardly grown. My second attempt at growing Daphne, they don't like me or my garden :(

there is no probs for the pub o pay .... they have said I must do whatever I feel is right ... problem is that from what I have read, is that they are hardy to -5 degrees C .... we get -18 degrees here in Cambridge

if I am to pay £20 per daphne, and end up buying £250 worth and they all die in December, I will be branded as a bad gardener in the village I live

but saying that, you are in Scotland and it does well there, so I will go ahead and get some (I need 11)

Pretty unusual to be that cold in Cambridge Dim.

Are you sure it was -18 even we have not had it that cold.

we had 2 consecutive days of -18 degrees .... last year, we had a few more

I have added 11 daphne to my quote and have emailed the client .... the pub is still closed, but should open in 2 weeks time .... a nice job, and am looking forward to this

I have also told them that we should make a herb/veg garden in the back (there is a large sunny area hidden away from everything else)

          It's beautiful Kath :wub2:

My Daphnes are still fairly young and although the Daphne odora Aureomarginata hasn't flowered yet, the Eternal Fragrance have been flowering for over a month now and the flowers have lasted well :wub2:

All my Daphnes are in planters in GP compost - the one I planted last year is putting on a real growth spurt a the moment.

Dim - you might want to consider the fact that Daphnes are toxic to both humans and animals and if there are to be kiddies in the pub garden they may 'play' with them.
