Good morning, so i have what i believe was a magnolia tree that was chopped down and i picked up wood for wood turning.
While stored it started letting out new shoots and leaves.
Was just wondering if i can make them root? Do i pick shoots off and after applying root hormone try to root them in medium, do i just plant the whole stump....?
Seems like plant wants to live so would be nice saving it if possible.

You could try but the chances of success aren't great with magnolia cuttings. It would be best to pull the shoots off and have a go that way. I would try a 50-50 mix of compost and perlite and keep them in a humidity dome somewhere out of direct sunlight.
If common for logs to sprout because they still have water in them.

As a woodturner you will know that its only the outside that has life. Take a schism off the edge of your log and work with that- a chord, to take a small section which is mainly bark and cortex. Keep it damp, vertical and place in soil up to the point where the shoot emerges. Directly in the ground will be best, to allow any roots to make contact with root mycelium. If it establishes, then move to suitable site as necessary, probably in year 2-3
The remainder of the log can be dried to permit turning in due course. Please report your success.

I think you might be onto a hiding to nothing but if it was me I would bury that log just below the surface and keep the area damp, perhaps pull off a few shoots and leave about three strong ones.
