I have a book, published in 1912, that tells you how to properly use this new fangled thing called a telephone. It's called 'Enquire Within Upon Everything'. A fascinating read. My father bought the book when it was new! :rolleyespink:

@Marley Farley it's a lovely book. It covers lots of subjects from cookery, how to remove stains, the etiquette of greeting visitors to your house and then saying goodbye (it depends on their importance and relationship to you - not close to you, you allow your maid or manservant to escort them out, depending on how close to you, you either see them to the door of the room or to the front door), where to stand in a room when visiting a sick person, the correct forms of address for people etc.

We actually have one of those, just as decoration now. Used to have it in Bucks as working phone in living room near the front door, normal wall hanging one in kitchen. As we lived in the country, from time to time had people stop to use phone, so imagine their surprise when we pointed to this! :heehee: We had an old fashioned doorbell above it, sold wood box with bell, normal button on outside. Still have that too.

Our telephone that we had in the hall (the old black Bakelite one with the drawer in the bottom) went wrong once. We could make calls but couldn't receive them.

So I phoned BT about it and complained. They were very good and took me through all the different things to try with the phone. When it got to the stage where they told me to turn the phone upside down and remove the metal plate covering the bell and check whether there was a loose wire, I told them that the phone doesn't have a bell in it. They asked me how the phone rings if we don't have a bell. So I said that we have a box on the wall with two bells init.

There was silence on the other end for a moment and then the man said that they had been looking for one of those sets of bells for a long time to put in the BT Museum so could they come and collect the phone and the box with the bells and they would give us any phone we wanted, doesn't matter what the price is. I said that I couldn't do that as the bells were in a mahogany box fixed to the wall and if they took it there would be a gap in the wallpaper. They told me to buy a new lot of wallpaper and they would repaper the whole hall. The engineer came round three days later with a decorator. :blue thumb:

It sounds a lovely book Some of the mannerisms of yesterday have gone now or have become defunct... Up until 2 yrs ago I had one of these that had been updated by a Telecome friendly work on today’s lines...My grandson has it now in his place..!

It originally came from the family hotel where the number was Marlborough 1...!!

Years ago I had to take a course in how to operate the company switchboard so that I could back up the receptionist. It was an old cord board. 40 incoming and 200 extensions. You had to pull on a lever to shoot power down the line to ring the bell as soon as you connected the caller to the extension they wished.

That thing would look like spaghetti palace when it got busy!
