I see that over 117,000 people have now voted for the name 'Boaty McBoatface' (including myself).

I would really like the stuffed shirts at the NERC to use this name for their new vessel - it's uniquely British :dbgrtmb:.

I suspect they will trump the popular vote and go for something more 'serious' - which would be a shame.

@clanless They were talking about it on Radio 2 lunch time programme a couple of weeks ago and Mr Vine was talking about it and evidentley even though the name you and others liked had been voted for,at the end of the day I think it was stated that it is going to be named by a committee I think it was or the research scientists, can't remember exactly and the name that was voted for isn't going to be considered.:snorky:

I personally think the ship/boat should be named after that chap who died trying to walk across the ice to the South Pole? on his own at the beginning of the year(Will have to look up his name as it escapes me at the moment:biggrin:)

Each to their own but I would never ever call a vessel Boaty McBoatface:old:

I heard something vaguely about this but to be honest I dont know much.

I think any ship deserves a proud name, to give a ship a name such as has been suggested is not a good idea.
Its not as the name actually makes any sense , or has any meaning.

      Or am I missing something?

I'm sure it will be called something like 'Arctic Explorer' - at which point everyone will lose interest.

I think someone also mentioned it be named after David Attenborough, I thought that would be very suitable.

As ex navy I can't really get on board with 'boaty mcboatface' but do see the funny side...

Boaty mcboatface is just silly. Hopefully everyone on here knows I have a sense of humour (a good, if not somewhat misplaced sense of humour, according to my primary school report that my mam has still got). But there's plenty of time for humorous silliness, and there's time for seriousness. Regardless of what the craft is for, it is an epic work ofengineering, and deserves a name that reflects that. It will also look after human lives, so again, serious. Besides, imagine, gods forbid, if the captain ever needs to make a distress call. 'this is boaty mcboatface, erm, help?

Just another puerile Bookface sponsored poll . The name does sound like something from a 5 year olds book. I suppose it did make a change from posting pictures of cats with funny expressions which seems to be 90% of Bookface. @JWK , do you have two stuffed shirts John ?

In these times of suicide bombings; ISIS; migrants forced from their homelands, lives lost in the attempt to reach other countries - I think we need as much silliness as we can possibly muster:oops:

I love the fact that Boaty McBoatface is winning, it's fun and may encourage people to follow the environmental sciences more, which is never a bad thing! I would also accept the David Attenborough, but he's been a hero of mine for almost all my years on this earth, so I'm kind of biased there. :snork:

It's being named the "Sir David Attenborough" thank God! One of the ships remotely operated sub-sea vehicles will be named Boaty in recognition of the winning vote. I think the new name of the ship is a worthy one!

To be honest no matter what it's called whenever it gets a mention in the media it will always be known as "that ship that was almost called BoatyMcBoatface"

Smart move to name the sub that though and pick such a well liked person to name it after.

I'm sad BoatyMcBoatface wasn't used, but it's Sir David's 90th this year so I'm also totally OK with it being named after him!

They are at least naming one of the ROv's 'Boaty' as a nod to the competition. Nice.
