Hi, I am Mike, 46, and I live in Leigh, Lancashire.

I'm brand new to gardening and am looking to grow some fruit and vegetables.

My garden is South facing and I've created 1 bed for now with 2 more planned, 1 of which will be raised.

My soil has quite a lot of clay in so I've taken a few inches off the top and mixed some better soil in with it so it no longer floods.

Welcome o the forum Mike. Good luck with the new garden. Now that you've sorted the flooding you just have to control the weather!

      Hello Mike

Clay. I think in this forum we have enough members with clay in their gardens that we could start a pottery factory! Me included so I have raised gardens too and do lots of container growing.

      Welcome to the forum!

Clay can be great for veg. High in nutrients and water retentive, just as long as you keep the texture open with grit and manure!

      Welcome

Thanks for the welcomes. So far I'm unable to control the weather unless I want rain.

Luckily I live near a farm with a plentiful supply of manure so I've mixed that in with my soil.

So far I've been successful with strawberries but my 10 year old tends to eat each one as it ripens.

Hopefully at some point I'll have to make a bowl full.

            Welcome to GC :dbgrtmb:

Clay is excellent for growing veggies. You should have a good crop. There's still time to plant some of them. :blue thumb:

With a south facing garden, clay soil and access to farmyard manure ... you are on to a winner with fruit and vegetables  and, as you have a 10 year old helper, it won't be long before you'll have tasty rewards on your plate ( that you can all share :heehee: )

Have a good nosey around the forums and don't be shy about jumping in with any questions you may have.

Best of British with your gardening and harvesting :dbgrtmb:
