    The elements that Id take from your moms garden are the curves, the use of different materials for the paths, raised beds and the plant types.

    I'd have more curves than the new plans have, add curved raised beds and a mix of architectural and cottage plants.

    Have you considered moving the patio to where the grass currently is so that you are sitting in the garden ? Do you need the lawn to take up the space that it does ?

    I'd use the planting as a way of adding a level of privacy.

    It all comes down to what you want from the garden and budget. Now is a good time to start the hard landscaping part of the project.

    Echo Sheals comment - start a projects thread and add loads of pictures.

    It's evolved a lot from the original plan! Looking excellent :)
