I am a newbie gardener and I know next to nothing about tropical plants.

I live in Belfast and would like to add a nice tropical and relaxing look to my back garden with some cool plants.

Can anyone give any suggestions to plants that will be able to withstand unpredictable outdoor UK weather?

    :)

What is an average winter like - temp wise?
    And a cold winter?

    Trachycarpus palms should be ok
    Chamaerops palms
    Quite a few bamboo species
Tree ferns (Dicksonia) - with some protection/fleecing
    Fatsia japonia
    Zantedescia & Kniphofia

Just off the top of my head
