Some say no news is good news.

    They are wrong.

I am currently waiting for a piece of news. As yet, I haven't received it. That's not good. Nor is it bad. It is the absence of news.

So the old saying really ought to be: no news is no news.

    Some say I'm too literal.

Although I agree with you I think that the idea of what is news, nowadays, is different from what it used to be.

I don't like no news and despise "celebrity news", who cares about who's having who's baby!?

News has changed a lot over the last few years.. it's more of covering up the news these days.

News has changed because the world has changed.

One such change has had a profound effect on humanity. That is the massive exponential growth of media channels. Not so many years ago, news too generally 3 forms. Internal matters, limited to families and friends, or work colleagues, or other small groups where the news mattered to them but nobody else. Localised news, relevant to people in a particular area, region or nation, and then of course global news.

Since the advent of the Internet, the first two categories have gone. Now such news is shared widely with all and sundry, potentially globally, through social media.

But even 'professional'/commercial news has had to change. Not so many years ago, in the UK, news was limited to a half hour or so per day slot on 2 tv channels, and a few radio channels and the papers. Nowadays of course there are hundreds of TV channels, some dedicated exclusively to 24/7 news. They need to fill them up with something. Whereas before, constraints of the media meant news producers had to be very selective about what they reported. They simply didn't have the air time to report everything. So they had to cherry pick the juicy bits. Now of course it is news if some b list pseudo celebrity gets a new hairdo.
