    Hi all!

I stumbled across a previous thread where an English woman asked for advice on trees or hedges that would block wind and would grow quite tall.

Two solutions: Blackthorn tree and Turkestan elm

It was incredibly helpful and I was wondering what your take on my situation would be.

We've just bought our first home! YEAH! But the living room looks out onto an old powerstation, which was the reason that most buyers weren't interested in buying the place, as it is on the neighbouring property and exceeds the height of a double story building.

There are some conifers planted along the wall and then there is a gap ... I was wondering what would be the best tree or hedge to plant that would grow quite tall, to cover the visually disturbing building from my side. I should also mention that this building is on the north facing side and that anything to high, might cut off, or rather will cut off our sunlight.

Or maybe someone has a better solution, other than building the wall taller...

    Your help is greatly appreciated!
    THX!

Hi Rix and welcome to Gardeners Corner. :)

Is there any chance you can put a picture or two on here please, it would help to see the situation and also make it easier to advise you with regarding plants. :)

    Welcome to Gardeners Corner Rix.

No idea what to grow in Joburg, but we have someone who might, he'll be along in a bit.

post a photo, then we can have a closer look .... you are speaking about a powerstation, so it could be huge (which one?) .... I used to live in SA and am very familiar with JHB (spent several years in JHB)

also need to know which way the shrubs will face (North/south etc)

for those from the uk, North facing is the sunny side

    Welcome!!

From a personal point of view, I would have to include an Erythrina and a Strelitzia nicolai somewhere.
