We occasionally have a green woodpecker visit giving itself away by it's "laugh". Heard it again this evening but looking out of our porch window I was amazed to see three, parents and a yougster,in the middle of a housing estate, feeding by our footpath and next doors garden. Made our day!
Only have a 4x zoom so no close ups.

Don't know Pete, Great Spotted woodpeckers are more common but we have never seen one here , so the Greens are more of a surprise to me. Perhaps they are more abundant elsewhere.

    Great pictures strongy.

Green woodie are nervous birds so you are lucky to have seen them in the town. We get them in the garden (we're in the country) and they love the red ants that we seem to have an abundance of. They fly at the slightest hint of movement but they nest in the trees at the bottom of our garden.

The greater spotted woodies are always eating the peanuts on our bird feeder but this year one of the young ones has worked out how to eat from the seed feeder as well.

    Lovely birds

The woodies were insect hunting (ants? )and occasionally feeding the young one, this was the first time we had seen more than one and the closest they had been. [IMG]

Wow Strongy!!!!! Lucky you!!!! Lots of people don't like them and shoo them away as they have a habit of digging holes in people's lawns to get the ants... we had one that turned up at work and dig the lawn outside :D :D - needless to say, all work stopped when it arrived!!!! (and one day we had 12 (yes TWELVE) phesants on the lawn!!!! - but thats another story....)
