    Hi

I really want to plant Colombines, but i'm not sure if they will bloom this coming June/July etc, if planted now? I always get confused with this and have made a few mistakes in the past buying seedlings that needed to be planted in the Aug to Dec period in order to flower the following summer e.g Hollyhocks and Oriental Poppies etc.

Is there a list that i could access for seedlings that would flower this year?

    I'm in Harrogate, UK .

    Cheers

You should find, Shane, that if you sow in early March most of them will flower this year.:coffee::snorky:

        The one's you don't sow??:dunno::heehee:

Foxgloves are mostly bi-annual, so will only flower next year, but the Chinese Fox Glove should flower as it's a different variety. Any plant that is a bi-annual will only flower the following year. There's a long list of perennials that won't flower this year and take time to establish before flowering. Sometimes it's better to buy established plants in pots. Columbines, [aka Aquilegia, Granny's Bonnet] if they like your garden will be there self seeding for years, and you will get even more colours from them as they hybridise easily.

Columbine are easy to grow and will flower this year if you plant them in March. If sowing seeds then they won't flower this year but will start next year.

Flowering time is usually May and June (in this country) and rarely runs into July.

They make a wonderful show of colour and self-seed very easily - which is a lovely problem to have. If they spread too much you can just dig them up and give them to friends.

Don't mention "Forget Me Not's" to Longk as they're one of his hate plants:hate-shocked::heehee: Me?, I love 'em and have both the white and blue varieties. They're another plant that once in your garden will self seed merrily for years.:snorky:

              Hi Shane,

Please excuse me if I appear a little bit thick here, but I'm confused :(

By " seedlings " to flower this year I m'm not sure what you mean. Most companies sell " bare root " plants which are ready grown ( usually in fields ) perennials which you plant when you buy them and they establish themselves and flower first year onwards.

To grow perennials and biennials from seed, you usually sow the seeds June/July and then plant them out in the Autumn and they will flower the following year onwards.

The Columbines you mention ( Aquilegia Vulgaris and its varieties ) won't flower this year if you sow them now. They fall into the group that you sow in June/July.

For perennials to sow this Spring for flowering this year you have to look for specially marked packets of seed. They usually say " Will flower first year from an early sowing". Off the top of my head all I can think of in this category are some Penstemons, Carnations, Coreopsis and Rudbeckia.
There are plants which are perennial that you can sow now to flower this year but need Winter protection. These are the likes of Lobelia, Petunia, Pelargonium ( Geranium ), and Fuchsia etc.

I'd like to say also, that if you grow any plants ( perennials ) that do flower in their first year, I usually pinch out the flowering stems before they flower as this will then provide a stronger and bushier plant in the next year.

Beg to differ, Anthony, but my Aquilegia seedling sown in the first week of March last year did flower in the Summer:coffee::snorky:.

Hi..ah sorry i see, yes, i meant seeds, as in from a packet :) That clears it up. Aw okay, that limits what i can plant then. They don't sell bare roots here, but i've seen potted Colombines in march at £3.99 for a single plant. That's a bit pricey for me. The packets i looked at didn't have much information on if they flower this year or next, which is what was confusing me. Thanks for the tips
