Our hi-fi system is about at the end of its life. Despite 'routine maintenance' (a cleaning CD) it now regularly fails to recognise that a CD is even present, and when it does try it randomly skips all over the place.

No problem I thought, its served its time, it must be getting on for 10 years old. I'll just by another one.

Well I might as well try to by a gramophone or one of those steam powered music engines that you sometimes get at seaside fair grounds.

All I want is a unit that connects to two speakers, and plays CDs. I don't need it to feature an iPod docking station for the iPod I'm never going to buy, I don't need it to have wi-fi or bluetooth or sharks tooth or chipped tooth, nor do I care if it can make my tea for me or massage my shoulders when I come in from digging the garden. However I'd accept all these things and more as just superfluous extra features, if only they would play CDs.

My 1970's Marrantz amp is playing up too:sad: Although I did get a 2000's Marrantz CD player that plugged straight into it as if they were waiting for the CD to be invented, no special cables or Adaptors, just plug in, switch to Aux & off I went:dbgrtmb:

Volume dial goes from 0 to 75, then its just got the infinity symbol.

I've discovered that you can still buy vintage hi-fi gear from Argos. They even have some that claim to play cassettes as well as CDs. Proper classics:)

This is my comfort zone - I spent years in the TV/HiFi trade, so might just be able to help with some advice.

Firstly, clueless - CD cleaners are only one notch above useless in my book, and the only way to clean the lens properly is to get the covers off. I can guide you what to do, but need some info first; what make/model is you CD player, and are you proficient with a screwdriver?

Zigs - when you say your Marantz amp is playing up, what is it doing or not doing?

Thanks FC, I'm ok with a screwdriver, and used to be into electronics years ago, specialising in audio, but I gave it all up because I found it too fiddly. I will be taking the old hifi apart at some point, but only because one of my favourite CDs is actually inside the case. It was in the CD drawer but I moved the hifi without first emptying it, and a CD managed to find its way out of the drawer, down the back of all the guts, and into the case. When I open it up it will be a one way mission I'm afraid, because I don't have the patience to ensure that I can put it back together again:)

Shame to waste it though - a cotton bud and a drop of vodka might be all you need to get a couple more years out of it.

If you want decent quality new kit, that comes only with what you want, hi-fi separates is the best way to go - - BUT, they are large by modern standards, and aren't often popular with the ladies of the household.

Another good alternative is something like this

They all seem to look like that nowadays. Too expensive for me I'm afraid. Argos have got technology that's more my era, and there's one for £139 that does 200W RMS per channel, which is about 10 times what we need these days, but its always nice to have a bit in reserve.

Not amplifying very well. Might need to take it apart & hoover it, there was a Mouse nest in it a few years back.

I've never seen the appeal, even when I was younger and they were the cool new technology.

I listen to music in the house, or in the car, but if I'm walking/cycling I don't want to disable one of my most significant senses, so no need for mobile audio of any kind. Besides, its just too much fafing on.

Fair play to you - if you change your mind, and want to give fixing your one a shot (or want to bounce any other questions off me) feel free to PM or email me :)

Not a bad idea Zigs - the Marantz amps tend to suffer from tired capacitors; they deteriorate over time, and will eventually see the sound either disappearing or distorting beyond recognition. Certainly repairable, whether financially viable to do so however is a different story - particularly when you can pick up the likes of this relatively inexpensively nowadays.

:) Clue, you have put up several posts of late referring to the fact that things 'nowadays' are becoming stressful and untenable, and I must say I read them all and enjoy what you have to say, nice to have a perspective from the young working person striving for a good life ... but will you just remind us how old you are please? Is it 35 or thereabouts?
