I am old to gardening and long in the tooth too. Been vegetable gardening since Dad shoved a hoe into my hands over 60 years ago. I am totally organic. I don't even allow glass beer bottles into my garden although cans are welcomed, but absolutely zero chemical fertilizers, herbicides or pesticides are allowed on my property. I am trying to learn how you folks over there garden. It is totally opposite of here but a plant is a plant after all so perhaps we can both somehow manage to learn a little something new.

So you are here too, huh. I joined up because I wanted to see Sheals pictures so here I am adding my 2 cents worth. The weather here is terrible today. 60F and blinding sunshine so bright I dug out my summer sunglasses:stirpot:

Welcome Chuck. I visited a great friend in Fort Worth (maybe not that close to you) a while back. She was trying to garden pretty much as she had done in Scotland....not a howling success with your very very hot summers and lack of rain! I visited the botanic gardens while over visiting, wow I have never seen such enormous Magnolias, jaw dropping.

Hi Chuck, welcome to Gardeners Corner. :) You'll find gardening in Britain a little bit different to where you are but the basics are all the same, feel free to add your 2 cents worth as it's always good to learn something new. I think we could cope with some of your terrible weather, when you've had enough please send it our way.

Which botanical garden did you go to, the one in FW? It is impressive. You should see the one in San Antonio. If I gardened there like I do here I would slap dab starve to death

Yes Chuck it was the 1 in Fort Worth. You would appear to have a pretty tricky climate for many plants due to your very very hot summers? I know my friend tried growing a fair few plants which she couldn't keep watered enough and they died. I also remember the spooky Spanish Moss hanging off many trees. I enjoyed seeing The Long Horns wow are they well named!

Welcome from upstate New York. You will meet some nice helpful folks on this forum.

Here is a quote from a countryman of ours concerning old gardeners:

No occupation is so delightful to me as the culture of the earth, no culture comparable to that of the garden. But though an old man, I am but a young gardener. - Thomas Jeffereson
